Years of Experiences
Spectrum CDC works in co-ordination with many schools in Faridabad, Delhi, Noida and Gurugram. We facilitate pull out programs wherein children have the advantage of regular schooling with therapeutic intervention. We conduct remedial programs and enrichment sessions for children going to mainstream schools. We take up modification and customization of academic content and send worksheets and assessment papers to schools. Children who are not going to schools are also given chance to become literate and learn functional skills to improve their daily living and social life. We have also done many awareness programs for teachers and parents in the field of child development. Positive parenting has also been our forte.
In INDIA children constitute nearly 40 per cent of the 1.2 billion population. Of this at least 10-12% of the under 18 years age suffer from abnormalities in behavior and development. Child mental health care has received scant attention in service, research and training aspects in the national context despite sound policy guidelines.
Child guidance began in our country as an area of social work practice in Mumbai way back in 1937. Clinical team approach with curative and ameliorative thrust was followed to deal with the emotional, psychological and social disorder of children. It is estimated that the country has just around two hundred centers serving the interests of Child Development and Adolescent Mental health related problems.
Another dimension is early detection and intervention of common disorders which is not only important but of paramount need in planning healthy, adaptive and future productive growth.Developmental monitoring, screening and evaluation is the need of the hour and it will help us provide early intervention to improve development in different domains depending on the needs of children. Although research proves that early intervention treatment services can greatly improve a child development, it can be helpful at any stage. Earlier the better should be the thumb rule. The majority of schools find learning problems of school children such as conduct disorders, childhood depression, autism, attention deficit disorder, dyslexia, slow learners etc.
Focus should also increase on the adolescent group with concerted programs of life skills, stress management, drug abuse prevention, reproductive health and sex education. Coordinated efforts of mental health professionals, educationists, school counsellor and employees from government, voluntary and self-help groups are urgently required for this massive task.
Children and adolescents form the bedrock of society. Any effort to promote their welfare, especially mental health, is a national investment. The child development and adolescent health care is designed to deal comprehensively with the task in hand.
